Yang Lei holds a Master of Science degree in Management and is Executive Vice President of OpenBook.
Having joined OpenBook in 2006, he was transferred in 2008 from consulting to the market promotions department. He has also worked in a variety of companies, including publishing groups, publishing houses, publishing companies (both foreign and domestic), the press and publications bureau, and digital publishing companies. Throughout these roles he has demonstrated a devotion to serve customers with valuable information and strategies. His clients have included the China South Publishing & Media Group, the Xinhua Winshare Publishing and Media Company, Southern Publishing & Media, Phoenix Publishing & Media, China Machine Press, China CITIC Press, China Mobile Reading Base, and the China Unicom Reading Base.
Simon de Jocas (Canada)

Publisher, President of Éditions Les 400 coups

Holder of a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Mc Gill University, Simon de Jocas was a teacher from 1986 to 1997 in the Lower North Shore, Nunavik and in Montreal. He also acted as a school consultant in cooperative learning for two of those eleven years. From 1997 to 2009, he worked in educational publishing houses such as Beauchemin, Duval and Nelson-Cengage. He held a variety of positions, including sales representative, director of sales and marketing. From 2009 to 2011, he was vice-president of the educational division at De Marque, a digital platform company. Currently, he is leading and managing Les 400 coups, a small independent publishing house focusing mainly on picture books, which he purchased in 2013. Alongside his mission as a publisher, he has been chairing the international division of the Québec Publishers Association for the last 5 years.

Award Winners' Series: Creative Talk with Zhu Chengliang

With its ‘Award winners' series’, CCBF offers you an intimate encounter with internationally recognised children’s writers and illustrators. Not only will you discover their life and career, you will also get a chance to ask all your questions to some of the most recognised children's book authors of our times.

Illustrating for children since 1984, Zhu Chengliang is one of the greatest contemporary illustrators from China. His work strikes for its lively, witty, and sensitive tone able to touch children and adults alike. First Chinese picture book artist to be distinguished in the prestigious “Best Picture Books” list issues by the New York Times (2008), his work has been published and exhibited in many countries, making him an undisputable ambassador of Chinese picture books around the world. His noticeable works include A New Year’s Reunion (2008), Flame (2007), and Playing with Lanterns (2017). Last addition in the long list of awards he has received, Don’t Let the Sun Come Down received a Golden Apple at the 2019 Biennale of Illustration Bratislava.

Fei Jia (China)

Former Senior Artistic Editor, Shanghai Juvenile and Children's Publishing House

Fei Jia, former senior artistic editor at the Juvenile and Children's Publishing House (Shanghai), has been in charge of the planning, drafting and illustration of juvenile and children's books for many years. He directed the publication of The World of Sanmao, which was awarded the China Book Prize. Fei Jia also received the Bing Xin Children's Book Award for his picture book titled The Animals Walkout.
In a career that spans over 30 years, he has designed a great number of children's books such as Five Thousand Years of China and I Wonder Why. He has also served as an editor and design consultant for book projects around China, including literature and art books, as well as children’s popular science books. Alongside his publishing career, he remains committed to his research on picture book illustration and has widely contributed to forge a new generation of successful picture book illustrators and artists.

Through the “Children Plus: Books & Seeds” exhibition (Hybrid zone, Booth 1A01), CCBF thrives to help children understand their relation to Nature, and plant seeds of knowledge and awareness for a way of life respectful of the planet and its diversity.

This seminar presents an overview on this wonderful exhibition encompassing over 200 titles from 20 countries and territories, covering a diversity of topics that range from plants, biodiversity, gardening, environment protection, healthy cooking, etc. An occasion to discover some of the most exciting titles on environment and sustainability, explore a trendsetting field of children's non-fiction, and hear some of the authors who gave life to the exhibition.

Grazia Gotti (Italy)

President, Giannino Stoppani Cooperativa Sociale

After she graduated in Pedagogy in 1983, Grazia Gotti founded the Cooperativa Giannino Stoppani with a group of kindergarten and primary school teachers and educators. The Cooperativa runs an independent children's bookstore and organises illustration exhibitions and other events related to children's books.
Grazia Gotti currently collaborates with many publishers, scouting for books and curating book series, and is also consultant for the Bologna Children's Book Fair. Since 2003 she is a member of the Board of Education of the Accademia Drosselmeier, a research centre and training school for teachers, educators, librarians and booksellers. Grazia is also the author of several books, including A scuola con i libri. Avventure di una libraia-maestra (At School with Books—The Adventures of a Teacher and Bookseller),Rizzoli, 2013; Ne ho vedute tante da raccontar. Crescere con i libri (I Have So Many Things To Tell You About—Growing up with Books), Giunti Editore, 2014; 21 donne all'Assemblea (21 Women at the Assembly), Bompiani, 2016. In 2019 she published her first picture book, Europa, illustrated by Daniela Stamatiadi (Edizioni Primavera).
In 2020, she is serving as president of the National Committee for the Gianni Rodari Centenary Celebrations.

Philip Giordano(Italy)

Illustrator and Graphic Designer

Born in Italy, Philip Giordano is a tireless globetrotter, who now lives and works in Tokyo. After studying at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts and the European Institute of Design, he earned a master’s degree in Animation in Turin. He works for a number of magazines and publishing houses around the world; illustrating book covers, designing toys, and creating children’s books and animations. The simple and colourful shapes of his illustrations, his iconic characters, and his graphic landscapes render his unique style immediately recognizable and transform his stories into a visual journey. His illustrations have received international recognition and awards including the Silver Medal by the Society of Illustrators; the White Raven Award; the International Illustration Prize Bologna/SM Foundation; theIllustrarte , Biennial of illustration; the Adults’ Prize and Reading Promotors’ Prize in the Figure Future exhibition organised by the Montreuil Book Fair. His work was featured in “Artist and Illustrations Masterpieces—50 Illustrators Exhibitions 1967-2016”, organised to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Children’s Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition in Bologna.

Beyond Language and Culture: The Development of Original Chinese Picture Books in Perspective

Children’s picture books published originally in China have gone through a flourishing development in the past ten years in terms of volume and, most importantly, quality. As little is known about this recent bloom, this seminar intends to offer a better understanding of the picture book production in the Chinese-speaking world.

How can those books retain their specific cultural values and find a place in the global publishing market through copyright exchange? What is their educational significance and how are they used in schools? How are they seen from outside China? A veteran picture book publisher, a librarian, a picture book artist, a researcher, and other overseas book experts will share their thoughts on the prospects and potential of Chinese picture books for children.

Children's literature theorist and critic

FANG Weiping is a renowned Chinese children's literature theorist and critic. Presently, he is also: Professor of the Children's Culture Research Institute of Zhejiang Normal University, Deputy Director of the Children's Literature Committee of the Chinese Writers Association, and a Consultant for the Feng Zikai Chinese Children’s Picture Book Award.
K. T. Hao (Taiwan, China)

Publisher and Senior Editor of Grimm Press, best-selling Author

K. T. Hao was honoured as the Most Creative Individual of the Year by Kingstone Bookstore. In 1996, he was invited to be the first Chinese juror by the Bologna Children's Book Fair Illustrators Exhibition. He is committed to introducing picture books from around the world to develop a taste for international aesthetics among Taiwanese children. He also sold the rights of many Taiwanese picture books to the United States, France, England, Canada, Germany, Japan, and Korea. Publishers Weekly described him as the driving force behind Taiwan's connection to the international picture book industry.
Huang Li (China)

Illustrator; General Manager, Xi’an Taiyangwa Design Studio

Illustrator and painter, Huang Li graduated from the Traditional Chinese Painting Department of the Xi'an Academy of Fine Arts. She is the founder of the Xi’an Taiyangwa Design Studio. Two of her most prominent works are An’s Seed and Grandma’s Family Horse.
An’s Seed has been listed among China’s most influential children's book of the last 60 years and was included among the “100 Best Illustration Books of All Times” by the National Library of China. It also won the Feng Zikai Chinese Children's Picture Book Award in 2015, on top of being recommended by the Paris Library Association for the biennial 2015–2016. Winner of the American Freeman Silver Book Award in 2017, An’s Seed has been published in traditional Chinese, Korean, French, as well as in English and Chinese for the US market.
Grandma’s Family Horse won the highest distinction in the 2019 Feng Zikai Chinese Children's Picture Book Award. On that same year it was selected in the White Ravens book list and won a silver medal in the 3rd Picture Book Era Award. The book will soon be published in complex Chinese.
Wang Zhigeng (China)

Director, Capital Library of China

Wang Zhigeng is currently the director of the Capital Library of China. He has long been engaged in the research and practice of library resource management and reader services. In recent years, he has centered his work on children’s books, developing reading guidance and reading promotion services. Additionally he writes and translates research work on children's book.
Tang Yaming (Japan)

Editor-in-chief, Baby Type Picture Book

Tang Yaming obtained his graduate and post-graduate degrees from Waseda University and the University of Tokyo and is currently the editor-in-chief of Baby Type Picture Book. In 1983, he was invited by Tadashi Matsui, the "father of Japanese picture books", to join the famous Japanese children's publisher, Fukuinkan Shoten, and became the first foreign official editor in Japan’s publishing industry. He edited a large number of outstsnding picture books that earned him many awards.

A Jia is a writer, translator, researcher and advocate for reading programmes. He is the founder founder of Hongniba and anchor of the programme “A Jia Book” broadcasted on Himalaya. He serves as a judge of the National Library’s Wenjin Award. He has authored many reference books, including A Little History of Picture Book, 101 Books That Fascinate Children (co-author), The Strength of Childhood: Stories about Genius in 20th Century American Children’s Books (co-author). He also penned picture books including Nezha Conquers the Dragon King and Li Na: Be A Better You, among others. He has translated reference books like, Artist to Artist, Dear Genius, Show Me A Story and over 200 picture books.

New Channels of Children’s Book Marketing: Between Challenges and Opportunities

2021 is a year of important changes for the children’s book publishing channels in China. With traditional channels peaking and ground-level bookstores shrinking, where are the opportunities for new channels in children’s book publishing? How imaginative can they be and what difficulties may children’s book publishers encounter when using them?

This forum co-organised by China Publishers magazine brings together publishing industry leaders, prominent influencers and vloggers to analyse the opportunities and dilemmas presented by these innovative promotion channels from a whole-industry perspective. It will boast specific examples and case studies by relevant key-players in this new arena.

In 2019, he established Renyi Culture, a professional children's book self-media company, focusing on children's book marketing and publishing. Renyi has established fruitful cooperation with China Children's Press & Publication Group, Zhejiang Juvenile and Children’s Publishing House, Jieli Publishing House, Sichuan Children's Publishing House, CITIC Press Group, Tiandi Publishing House, Dandelion Children's Book House, Xinyi, Jing Ban Ruo Qing, Dolphin Media and other high-quality domestic publishers. Wang Fang is the host of several popular television programmes in China.
As a writer, she has published The Best Way to Give to Children; The Best Way to Read Tang Poetry; 50 EQ Lessons for Children; and Crossing the History Line and Eating through Small Ancient Prose, which has sold more than 3 million copies.
In recent years, she has engaged as an educator, focusing on cultivating children's knowledge and interest into Chinese culture, about which she records thousands of courses every year.
Wang Fang is also a keen reading promoter who thrives to spread knowledge and recommended good books through her Tik-Tok account.

Award Winners' Series: Creative Talk with Jean-Claude Mourlevat

Jean-Claude Mourlevat is one of the most influential writers of his generation and the first French laureate of the prestigious Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, in 2021. His writing is wide-ranging and diverse—his 14 novels for children and young adults oscillate from social critique to tale, fable and fantasy genres, all of them showing a unique ability to renew the fairy tale tradition.

Several of his novels have been translated in Chinese, including The Upside Down River, La troisième vengeance de Robert Poutifard, The Pull of the Ocean, and Jefferson.

Judith Oriol holds a PhD in French literature from La Sorbonne University, Paris. She gained experience in publishing at Editions Gallimard and pursued her career in the cultural section of the French diplomatic network, in Romania and then in India. Based in Beijing since 2019, Judith Oriol is Cultural Attachée for Books and Debate of Ideas at the French Embassy in China.

Is success granted for international best-sellers on every market? What strategies can publishers develop to promote their original contents internationally? How to materialise these objectives through practical business cooperation? Those ever-lasting questions are particularly relevant to Chinese publishers, who have long been “importers” of contents, and are now thriving to promote their local production worldwide. Co-founder and vice president of the Sino Italian Publishing Cultural Association, Sara Wang is the CEO of Sìdee Cultural Communication, an agency specialising in representing Italian authors and publishers. She is the Chinese agent for many acclaimed titles, including Codex Seraphinianus (Luigi Serafini) published by United Sky, Il gioco delle idee (Marcello Lippi) published by Yilin, Americano (Massimiliano Virgilio) published by White horse, and La storia degli uomini (Gianni Rodari), published by Jieli.
She is a regular collaborator of the Bologna Children’s Book Fair since 2016 and is one of the organisers of the Bologna Illustrators Exhibition in China.
In 2018, she served as jury member in the Silent Book Contest.
Leeann Bortolussi (Italy)

International foreign rights director, Giunti Editore

Currently the rights manager at Giunti Editore, Leeann Bortolussi is involved in the rights sales for titles across the catalogues for both children and adults. She began in publishing in 1990 as the foreign rights manager for Dami Editore, working closely with Piero and Andrea Dami; in 2008 Dami International joined the Giunti Group. Originally from California.
Leeann graduated in English with an Italian minor at Stanford University, and she has lived in Milan since 1985.

Michael Morpurgo is the former UK Children’s Laureate and best-selling author of over 150 books, including Private Peaceful, Kensuke’s Kingdom, The Butterfly Lion, and War Horse, which became a hugely successful production that toured around the world—including Shanghai—and a movie by Steven Spielberg. His moving and thought-provoking novels have earned him multiple awards and he received a Knighthood in 2018 for services to literature and charity.

A Jia is a writer, translator, researcher and advocate for reading programmes. He is the founder founder of Hongniba and anchor of the programme “A Jia Book” broadcasted on Himalaya. He serves as a judge of the National Library’s Wenjin Award. He has authored many reference books, including A Little History of Picture Book, 101 Books That Fascinate Children (co-author), The Strength of Childhood: Stories about Genius in 20th Century American Children’s Books (co-author). He also penned picture books including Nezha Conquers the Dragon King and Li Na: Be A Better You, among others. He has translated reference books like, Artist to Artist, Dear Genius, Show Me A Story and over 200 picture books.
