Bringing a compelling mix of academic expertise, business know-how and innovative thinking, the CCBF Conference programme will offer 10 highly engaging seminars aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of children’s publishing.

The Official Conference Programme is open to all Professional Visitors provided with a Programme Pass. Exhibitors/VIPs/Media Passes include free access to all official events.

The most updated market data and figures are carving out a place of choice for themselves in the Conference programme. The publishing industries of eleven countries will be thoroughly described with data presented by the world leading analyst Nielsen Book, followed by the yearly Chinese market survey held by OpenBook.

In another seminar, audio-books will be at the centre of an interesting global market presentation held by Storytel and Qingting FM.

As part of the Children's+ event stream, art, architecture and design will be a highlight of our Conference programme. We will look closely at the many recent ground-breaking books that foment children's artistic sensibility or inform them about the lives of the greatest artists. The session will include prestigious publishers (Roger Thorp from Thames and Hudson; Claire de Cointet from Éditions du Centre Pompidou), as well as first-class authors (Patricia Geis, author of best-selling Meet the Artist series; Page Tsou, SM-Bologna International Illustration Award winner) and representatives from museums and art institutions, all specialising in visual arts, design and architecture for children.

There will be more beautiful book under scrutiny in the CCBF Official Conference. Pop-up books will be analysed from all angles, in a high-level round table including Japanese picture book artist and paper engineer Katsumi Komagata, pop-up collectors Massimo Missiroli and Matteo Faglia, as well as pop-up book leading publishers from France (Les Grandes Personnes) and China (Lelequ).

Reading and writing will also be a core part of the programme. Fomenting healthy reading habits, raising children's reading skill and interest towards books, encouraging the production and publication of quality literature for children will be among the questions discussed in two seminars, moderated by the influential children's editors Maria Russo (The New York Times) and Julia Eccleshare (Hay Festival).

We will also look beyond books to explore all the business extensions offered to publishing by the latest technological innovations. In addition to our already well-known digital seminar, we will cast light on how licensing and audiovisual rights connect to publishing, with representatives from Penguin Ventures, Lego Publishing and TENCENT Video.

Where the Beautiful Things Are–Art, Architecture and Design in Contemporary Children's Books

Illustrators Survival Corner (Copyright Zone)

Many children have a natural tendency for art and construction. Books can nurture the child’s inclination, providing at the same time useful information and stimulating new ways to experience art and the urban space. Through stunning illustrations, photography and three-dimensional elements, a large number of exquisite and captivating titles have been introducing young readers to the most famous artworks, buildings and design objects.

During the last decade, those ground-breaking titles have formed a vigorous trend in the global market, including in China where artistic cultivation has become an irreducible part of children's education.

What do those titles have in common? What makes them so special and what values do they carry? Specialised publishers, content creators, artists and cultural institutions who have contributed to connecting picture books to art education will discuss these questions in a panel discussion.

This seminar is part of the first CCBF Children+ focus which is dedicated to Art, Architecture in children’s books. It is a complement to the Children’s + Book Exhibition presented during CCBF.

Learning to Read, Learning to Love Reading—How to Raise Readers for Tomorrow

Official Conference Room (Copyright Zone)

It is an accepted fact that reading is crucial for kids. Study after study shows that babies and toddlers thrive intellectually and emotionally when they’re read to, and that books help children of every age expand their language skills and comprehension of the world, boost their critical thinking and imagination, build empathy and strengthen bonds with caregivers. At the same time, reading can be a source of stress for parents: “Which books should I read to my baby, and how early? Is my child reading soon enough, fast enough, in an advanced enough way? What’s the best way to use reading to give kids a ‘head start’ in today’s competitive landscape? With everything else going on, how can I help my child not just know how to read well, but choose to read on his own?

This session will bring together experts from several nations to offer a cross-cultural perspective on how parents and educators can help make reading for pleasure a central part of childhood—and why it's ever more urgent in our distracted, digital world.
