SHVIP: 2020 fellows announced

The Shanghai publishing scene is getting ready to welcome a new edition of the SHVIP fellowship. An initiative developed by the Shanghai International Children’s Book Fair since its first edition, the SHVIP programme is on track for a new edition to receive its eight generation of fellows. Over the years, SHVIP has already helped 74 international publishers come to Shanghai to gain detailed insight into the local publishing landscape and visit CCBF from an exclusive perspective.

11 Fellowships of the SHVIP 2020

As a result of its traditional call for applications—this year marked by the Covid-19 pandemic and the cancellation of most book-related events— the fellowship has received 80 eligible applications from 29 countries.

Eleven top-level publishers from Europe, South-East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, North America and Oceania have been selected to take part in this year’s edition and are expected to visit Shanghai from 9 to 14 November 2020.

The SHVIP fellowshipis a reflection of the variety that can be found in the publishing industry, not only because of the great cultural and linguistic diversity the group will offer, but also because itbrings together companies of all sizes, producing catalogues covering different segment and age ranges.

Also, there is a strong cement to create coherence within the fellowship— the eagerness shared by all the participants to discover the Chinese publishing market. Each of them has been carefully selected, not only for the exceptional quality of their production but also for their interest in exploring the potential of Chinese children’s books, knowing local writers and illustrators and sharing knowledge and know-how with their Chinese peers. This year more than ever, the fellowship is an opportunity to go beyond the distinction between “buyers” and “sellers” and create an appropriate atmosphere for dual copyright exchange and mutual learning.

The programme will encompass a tour of visits to some of Shanghai’s leading publishing companies and bookstores, the already traditional Book Pitch Party, and the fellows will be fully active at the fair, as exhibitors, conference speakers, illustration portfolio reviewers etc.
